In a hotel room, the host sits on the bed sewing an unidentified object (okay, I don’t mean aliens – but, oh, ho ho, how funny, sewing aliens, tee hee) Singing is heard …
“Lin xing mi mi feng … in a moment we’re going to be visiting Tammy Chen and Raymond Lam. Apparently Raymond is going to propose to Tammy today … I have to go to their wedding and so I have to dress up … I’m going to sew this flower to this strip of cloth and put it on my head! Is it nice like this? Hmm? Hmm? Hmm?” (Camera nods) “What are you nodding for? You have to say ‘It looks nice!’”
Change of setting to a pretty place. The host’s sitting on red sofa with cute, square, red cushions (and she is wearing that band and flower).
“Such a comfortable and romantic place! We should have some champagne, yes? So, where is this? Correct! It is Tammy Chen and Raymond Lam’s filming location!”
The girl gets off the sofa.
“Now, we’re going to go and take a look. Why did I have to dress like this? Because very soon Raymond will be proposing to Tammy!”
The girl turns left into a different area of the place.
“This is where they are filming. Can you hear? The director’s shouting something! So, shh! They’re starting to film!”
And now we are looking at the director’s camera. Tammy Chen, looking very pretty with her long hair and glasses and her neat, pink shirt, comes into view! Tammy’s walking … and the camera moves and we see Raymond! Hot, hot Raymond in a white tee and a black jacket, holding a white bouquet of flowers. He sees Tammy, puts down the flowers on the table and gets up. Director yells, “Cut!”
Back to 6 o’clock Special Report’s camera of the entire set.
“Okay, this is Tammy Chen and Raymond Lam’s filming location. Because they’re filming a proposal scene today, look, they’re already setting up the table. Then we’re going to see a very nice bouquet of flowers. Ah! I see her! I see the leading lady!”
She shuffles over to Tammy.
“Excuse me, are you Miss Tammy Chen?”
Tammy: “Yes!”
“Nice to meet you! We’ve specially come from Taiwan. Dressed like this, you’re going to head off to work soon, yes?”
Tammy: “Er, actually I’ve already finished working and this scene is a dinner one.”
“Then can you introduce to us what this series is about?”
Tammy: “Er, this series was based on Wong Man Wah’s novel, sixty-one times fifty-seven and it talks about how these few girls see love, like the different views of love, that kind. I’m a very conservative female and at the start I was, probably I was very conservative towards love but then after a while –”
“You become very wild, kind of?”
Tammy: “No, no. I won’t get very wild, but maybe it’s like, I meet this very special guy and he teaches me what love is. And in the end I change my opinions of love.”
“Yes. Have you seen this? I especially made it today for you. I have just been to a temple to buy band and the flower, because I heard you guys were filming a proposal scene today, yes?”
Tammy: “Yes!”
“Has he already proposed?”
Tammy: “Not yet, in a moment.”
“Then are you looking forward to Raymond proposing to you?”
Tammy (laughs): “Today’s my first time meeting with him! Er, second time! The first time I saw him was when we were shooting … shooting those photographs and this is the first time when the two of us actually sat down to have a chat. We were just talking about how I don’t even know what his interests are but we’re filming a proposal scene already. And I’m a little nervous.”
“Will it be pretty awkward?”
Tammy: “Yeah, a little bit!”
Back to the director’s camera! Tammy and Raymond are sitting a table and the camera zooms in on Tammy’s face and we see her talking – but we don’t hear what she’s saying. There’s a lot of chit-chat and someone’s calling something out (probably the director giving instructions). Then we cut to another scene and they’re standing this time (Tammy and Raymond are standing) … it zooms in on Raymond’s face – but he’s looking down. Then the director gives the order and they sit down at the table. Raymond points at something hidden behind a bottle of champagne or something and says something – and Tammy picks it up and we see that it is a mobile phone!
Back to 6 o’clock Special Report’s camera.
“Are you homesick? But I think you’re probably pretty used to life here already.”
Tammy: “Yes, I’m already pretty used to it but of course I miss my home. Especially after about two or three months, the last few weeks I really miss my home.”
“I’m a little bit curious … because coming to Mainland to work, apparently, like I was, your whole face just cracks because you’re not accustomed to the climate. But your skin is still very good, do you have any tips to tell us?”
Tammy: “Because I only just arrived!” (Laughs)
“So you’ve kept your skin in a really good condition when you were in Taiwan and you only just came here (Shanghai)?”
Tammy: “Yes, in Taiwan I made sure my skin was moistened and this time I’ve brought about three different types of masks. There are the mask ones and also the paste types and as soon as I came … maybe it’s to do with experience because as soon as I was here I knew to find a place to apply it.”
“Oh, really? Because you see my lip is cracked here, at the edge and then my skin was peeling …”
Tammy: “Maybe it’s because last time I came here I heard someone say to eat one of the vegetables grown in the land here … what was it? Xiao Ai, Xiao Ai! (Her assistant) Which food did they saw to eat here?”
Xiao Ai: “Shanghai?”
Tammy: “No, they said, didn’t they say to eat some food … some vegetable that was grown here and so you’d be a bit more accustomed to the climate here?”
Question marks pop up over Xiao Ai’s head.
Tammy: “Never mind.”
“It seems like Xiao Ai doesn’t really know.”
Tammy: “She probably doesn’t.”
“Xiao Ai’s face was like… Ah? What? Okay, no worries. What I actually wanted to ask the most was have you ever hoped for what your boyfriend’s proposal in the future would be like? What the feeling of the scene would be like?”
Tammy: “Yes, I have. But what I imagine it to be isn’t the very lively kind, maybe it’s just walking hand-in-hand with my boyfriend -” (and Tammy takes the host’s hand to demonstrate) “And he suddenly says, ‘Hey, let’s get married.’ Or maybe he could say, ‘Hey, I want to live together with you.’”
“Really? Just that simple? That laid-back?”
Tammy: “Yeah, yeah, yeah.”
“He doesn’t have to kneel down? Or propose to you in public? Or maybe when it’s 101 he writes your name?”
Tammy: “I don’t particularly like things getting too public. But afterward he’s probably going to have to make up with the diamond ring. This he’ll have to.”
(Host takes Tammy’s hand) “So simply it’s just like, ‘Okay, let’s get married.’ ‘Okay! 15 carat!’ Is it like that?”
Tammy: “15 carat maybe, maybe I’ll say it the next day.” (Laughs) “Wait until the atmosphere’s a bit calmer and then say it. Or he could secretly just tuck it into my hand or something.”
Tammy receives the order to go off and film now!
“Okay, I won’t bother you yet.” Tammy goes. “Every time visiting people on the set is like this. It’s like as soon as they start filming we’ll have to hurry off. So right now we’re going to go and see how Raymond proposes to Tammy.”
The host moves out of the way and reveals Tammy and Raymond sitting at the table and the camera zooms in on them.
To the director’s camera! Tammy and Raymond’s wine glasses go “chink” and they have a little sip of wine (champagne, whatever… what’s the difference, anyway?”
Director: “Cut!”
Now we get a close-up shot of the food they’re eating – steak! And the table is set up very nicely.
Back to 6 o’clock Special Report’s camera.
“Hello, nice to meet you. What would you like to eat?” (She is getting into the spirit of things, I suppose). “Because the setting of this proposal scene is at a restaurant, we see a lot of kitchen utensil props! Like behind me here we see the props of a bar – there’s orange juice and wine, et cetera. Whatever you want to drink and it’ll be there. And looking over here … what is this plate? It is their specially prepared steak. Everyone can see that this steak is … I think it’s probably what Tammy and Raymond will be having. It’s just that it’s been left for quite a while. You see this vegetable here? It’s withered! I wonder if Tammy will really have to eat it.”
To the director’s camera we go and we see pretty Tammy at the table with that scary, rotting steak (eww).
Back to 6 o’clock Special Report’s camera and we see … an arm? A guy’s arm … skin is kind of tanned … and it has a few scratches on it … hmm …
“Oh! Raymond’s hurt! Who did it?”
And we see Raymond (oh so it was his arm with the scratches on it).
Raymond: “Our make-up artists did it.” (Laughs)
“And you were just saying if it looks like scratches or not? It looks a bit more like it’s dirty.”
Raymond: “No, it’s not done yet. We need to add a little bit of blood and then it’ll look more like it.”
“I heard that you guys would be filming a proposal scene today, right?”
Raymond: “Right, right. In a moment, though. This scene now isn’t. This scene is … I cooking dinner for Tammy. The next … the next scene … there will be a proposal scene, except it’s a playful proposal.” (Laughs)
Camera goes back to Raymond’s made-up scratches.
“It’s okay, don’t worry, do it slowly. Slowly.”
Raymond: “Slowly.” (Changes dialect) “Slowly.”
(Repeats after him in that dialect) “Slowly.” (Back to Mandarin) “You speak Shanghainese as well?”
Raymond: “No. Just two sentences, I’m just fooling around.”
“Oh …” (she says something in Shanghainese - the subtitles didn’t appear so I don’t know what) (laughs)
Raymond pulls a face.
“I’m telling him off – taking the chance to tell him off!” (Laughs)
Raymond: “Lucky I understand.”
“Okay, so what are your proposal lines in Cantonese?”
Raymond: “Er, roughly it’s saying … er … it’s … how do I say it? Well, I hope that for every minute, every second in the future I can be with you, creating with you, something, miracles, that kind. But then if you want –”
“You have to say it seriously! Say it seriously in Cantonese!”
Raymond: “Actually, being serious – ”
“Say it to me.”
(Caption: Now that baffles me…)
Raymond takes a breath and faces her. “Just seriously saying one sentence? Is that enough?”
Host nods. “Yes.”
Raymond says, “Do you want to marry me?” very seriously in Cantonese and Winter_Stargirl falls off her chair, all ditzy and everything.
Winter_Stargirl picks herself up off the floor to continue the transcript.
(In Cantonese) “No!” (Back to Mandarin) “There’s no ring.” (Waves her hand around)
Raymond: “This is exactly what this scene is – no ring.”
“On our website, as long as there are your series, there are a lot of people leaving messages! Saying that we have to come and find you, that we have to come and visit you.”
Raymond: “Thank you. Thank you for your support. I will film even more series and I hope that I will get a chance to sing again more goods songs for everyone.”
“Also we had to say – ”
There are interruptions.
Raymond: “Oh, nothing. We just have to let our crew take some pictures of the injury.” (And he holds out his arm for the digital camera.)
“Why do you need you take pictures of it? Is their aim to –?”
Raymond: “Because they have to continue the scenes.”
“Yes. So we have to see how many scratches that the make-up artist drew and next time there’ll have to be the same number of scratches again. Let’s count how many. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. This time there’s around about fifteen scratches. Next time if there’s even one less then there won’t be continuity. If in Love Multiplication there’s a missing scratch we’ll be coming along with everyone to complain!”
Raymond laughs.
“And if you answer correctly, what will you get? A kiss from Raymond!” (Laughs while Raymond is rendered speechless). “Ha ha, I said that myself.”
To be continued …
