Raymond Lam, Tammy Chen, The New Breath of Love
Adapted from Taiwanese writer, Wang Wen Hua's novel, 61*57, idol series The New Breath of Love has been filming since May in a low-profile manner. Our reporter got an exclusive chance to visit the set the day before the series finished its filming completely, and got to see Hong Kong TVB's famous siu sang, Raymond Lam, and the beautiful Taiwanese actress, Tammy Chen, working together.
Raymond Lam: Providing a bit of reality to idol series
In the series, Raymond Lam's character Tsui Hoi is one that is free and doesn't allow himself to be controlled by others. His attitude to love is like a game, and not until he met Tammy Chen's character, Lam Ching Wai, did he begin to become afraid, wanting to take on a responsibility, but not being able to do so.
That day when the reporter went to visit them on the set, the crew had just come by train to a cafe. The weather was very hot and Raymond Lam went straight to buy refreshments for the workers as soon as he arrived. Apparently, Raymond treating others is a very common thing and no matter their age, other people would still refer to him as big brother Fung.
Before the beginning of the filming, the reporter asked for Raymond and his girlfriend in the series, Tammy Chen, to take a photo together. It might've been because he's been followed too closely by reporters recently, but he seemed rather irritable and reluctant. But once they began the filming of a scene that was about him and Tammy seeing a concert together, he very naturally reached out his hand and pulled Tammy over towards him, gently hugging Tammy's small waist from behind, slowly and relaxedly letting his affections show. "Worthy of a being actor!" the reporter sighed.
The New Breath of Love is Raymond's first non-TVB series. He told the reporter that he has worked with almost every one of TVB's fa dans and that co-operating with actors that aren't TVB's, he could learn from their good qualities. When he films his next TVB series, maybe he could bring something new into it. Due to the fact that TVB very rarely produces idol series, Raymond's performance in The New Breath of Love can also be considered as a first attempt at something. Raymond said, "Taiwan produces more idol series but their style is rather powerful and unconstrained, a bit far from reality, while TVB's series tend to stick closer to reality and so I hope I can bring TVB's style into the idol series."
Speaking of the strongest feelings he has towards this series, Raymond said, "This series is the most relaxed one I've participated in since entering the entertainment industry." Although he has to work for over ten hours each day, at TVB he has a record of passing a few days without getting any rest. Laughing, Raymond said, "After going through TVB's training and then going out to film in the Mainland, whatever hardships aren't really that tough anymore."
Tammy Chen: Giving him a little hint
Even though Tammy has always been filming idol series, but she also plans to film many different character types. In The New Breath of Love, it was her first time challenging an older and unmarried woman, playing the role of the thirty-year-old Lam Ching Wai. In Tammy's opinion, this character is just like her name ("Ching" means quiet), she is introverted and conservative, with a "when I fall in love I will also have to marry" attitude. And even though, inside, she really wants to go out with someone, when she meets someone who she likes, she refuses to take the initiative, instead quietly waiting for the other to take action. Two men with entirely different personalities walk into her life at the same time. One is the well organised Wong Ming Ching, played by Alex Fong CS, and the other is the good-looking, humorous and romantic Tsui Hoi, played by Raymond Lam. According to her previous thoughts, she should be choosing Wong Ming Ching, who is similar to herself, but at the same time she is attracted by Tsui Hoi, who doesn't "follow the rules" and makes her happy at one time, sad at the other.
Tammy Chen has always liked Wang Wen Hua's novels. She thinks that his discussion on love is very close to what people of this modern world thinks. Before she started on this project, she especially went to pay Wang Wen Hua a visit and talked with him to gain an understanding of his thoughts and feelings he uses when writing on a particular character. His suggestions were indeed helpful to Tammy when she was "moulding" her character. As to Raymond Lam, who she is working with for the first time, Tammy's evaluation is: "He's very smart. He always knows to do the appropriate thing at the appropriate time."
The real-life Tammy's attitude towards love is very close to that of Lam Ching Wai's. The only thing that is different is that when she meets someone who she likes, although she won't take the initiative, she would still give him a little hint. Her Prince Charming doesn't necessarily have to be good-looking, but must understand her and be smart.
The sun shines into reality
Raymond Lam
Sentence of motiviation:
Not to be afraid of small characters, complete each job that is handed to you well...
The rough beginning:
When Raymond Lam first entered the entertainment industry, a lot of people didn't understand why. With a rich background, he could study abroad in an American university and finish his Architecture course, then afterwards inherit his father's business. But just for an interest, he gave up on university after one year and came to TVB's Acting Class. TVB has a lot of capable people and Raymond could only start with walk-ons. But walk-ons aren't as bad as what most people think, at least you could show your face. Raymond's first on-screen appearance was as a waiter serving tea. In the series, the audience could only see his hands pouring the tea and the only time when they could see his entire body was in a big group photo and no one could tell him apart in the big group of people. Afterwards, in an ancient series, he at least had one line, but because his face was masked, and so, similarly, no one noticed him. He continued doing walk-ons for almost a year.
The struggle:
Talking about that rough time now, Raymond didn't have a single complaint to make. In the acting industry, luck and diligence is as needed as in any other industry. Hardworking doesn't necessarily bring you chances, but if you're not hardworking, even if a chance comes, you still wouldn't be able to take it. The only thing you could to is: not to be afraid of small characters, complete each job that is handed to you well, cherish each on-screen appearance. Don't be afraid of doing those walk-ons, instead let the director see that you are serious about this job. And sometimes whether or not an actor is serious is the key to making the director choose you for a role. Raymond had preparations done and when the chance came, he was able to grasp it.
The fortunate thing was, about a year later, there was a series that needed an actor who looks very bright, but with tanned and healthy skin. At that time, Raymond had just returned from a job in India and was very tanned, meeting the criteria of the role. Even though Raymond was the third male lead, but it was enough to make him wild with joy. He completed the job seriously and diligently and because his performance was so good, after filming that series, he received his next series, A Step into the Past, playing the role of the King and coming second only to the leading actor, Louis Koo. Afterwards, he finally began his time as leading actor and now, he is TVB's highly promoted siu sang.
Next goal:
For the next six months, Raymond will be filming two modern series, with a total of one hundred episodes, one of which is a sixty episode long series that is for the tenth anniversary of Hong Kong's handover back to China, a collaboration between TVB and China, starring Mainland actors Chen Bao Guo, Chen Kun and Hong Kong actors, Gallen Lo, Raymond Lam and others. The fact that such competent actors from both sides will be working together makes Raymond really anticipate this series.** Happy to see Raymond co-operating with Gallen again after Golden Faith in Fung Wan Shui Yuet!

Sharon and Rain
The Sun
Yesterday, Sharon Chan (left of image) was a guest-host for a radio show and especially invited her good friend Rain Li as a guest. However, Sharon actually mentioned Raymond Lam, but Rain said, "Sharon is closer to him (Raymond)!" and very obviously meaning for Sharon to admit to something that wasn't true. On the other hand, it turns out that the two became close friends since filming together three years ago and since then have referred to one another as her sister.
Don't ask me where the images are. I don't think Sasa at Fung's Label posts images unless they're of Raymond. Well, I think we will all be able to survive without a picture of Sharon and Rain ^.^
Ming Pao
Yesterday, Sharon Chan took on the role of a hostess to interview her good friend Rain Li. When Rain was a model she met Sharon, but they only became close friends after filming TVB's Dream of Colours, and would tell each other personal things.
The two have both been rumoured to be with Raymond Lam before and they both immediately denied it, with Rain first saying, "Sharon is closer with Raymond." Sharon then said, "Raymond and I have the same manager. Our manager is the closest with Raymond." Afterwards, Sharon said that she and Rain both seek different qualities when seeking a partner: "I like the mature type while Rain likes good-looking guys. She really likes Beckham!" Beside her, Rain said, "No, that was a long time ago."
Sing Pao
Yesterday, Sharon Chan was the guest-host of a Metro radio show and she invited her good friend, Rain Li, as the guest to be interviewed. The two had known each other since they were little, but only became friends three years ago when they worked together on the series, Dream of Colours. Sharon expressed, "We'd seen each other before when we used to be models when we were little. Back then people used to say that we really look alike and Rain thought so too. We were always mistaken for one another." After filming DOC, although the acting was fake, the feelings were real. They were so close that they began to call each other her sister. Rain laughed that while filming, it was incredibly tough and she would usually sleepover at Sharon's house and would impolitely eat all of Sharon's snacks.
Seeing that they were so close and how they even look alike, would their criteria for a partner be the same? Sharon admitted, "Not the same! Rain likes good-looking guys while I like the more mature types." At the mention of how both of their ex-rumoured boyfriend was Raymond Lam, both of them seemed quite evasive of the topic but said that they weren't close to Raymond. Rain even pointed at Sharon and said, "She's closer to him!" Sharon then shifted the matter onto her manager.
Fables?
Posted by 兔牙仔仔 at Baidu and thanks to sehseh for giving me that link!
Fable 1: When Raymond first entered the entertainment industry, he was followed by bodyguards who called him their young master and so then the fans and media started calling him that as well. (The version that I heard was that when Raymond was visited on the set of Blade Heart for an interview, the reporter doing the interview discovered that Raymond's father has always been sending someone from his company to take care of his son and so in the newspaper article, the reporter referred to Raymond as a young master and since then this nickname has been widely used.
*Raymond's Mainland fans usually do call him young master.
Fable 2: His real name is Lam Fung. He studied the same subject as me but was in a higher grade. At that time he was really popular and was the winner of the top ten singers of the school. He went there for about a year and stopped. Later I heard he was playing the King in A Step into the Past and everyone excitedly found it to watch. It really was him, though he was a bit darker than original. (Personally I think that the person who wrote this was from Raymond's school. I'd also like to add that Raymond used to be called Lam Yat Fung
*And before Lam Yat Fung, Raymond was Lam Wui Man.
Fable 3: His singing is even better than his acting and it was probably because that it was harder to become well-known as a singer than an actor and so he decided to act instead. At that time there was this classic story. The Architecture classes are held in a large classroom and there would always be songs playing. There was this one time when a Jacky Cheung song was playing and after listening to it, no one noticed anything much. That was when he told everyone that the song was actually his own version.
*I wonder which Jacky Cheung song it could've been?
Fable 4: He definitely went to Xiamen University, what is there to say about that? He was in Architecture in 1996 and was a boarder student and lived at Cai Qing Jie Building. If you can, go and look up that year's list of the winners of the top ten singers. The first one whose last name is Lam is it. Afterwards when it was the school's anniversary he specially came back and sang that song. Oh, that time I think I took some photos, but I can't remember if I got them developed or not, I'll go back and have a look. Before he was a very simple person, think he had always been in an all boys school and he'd never dated anyone before. He'd always be asking the guys in his class how to ask girls out. Later when he was a bit famous and came back, he is still very friendly and he even specially went to teach the boarding students who will be entering the top ten singers competition singing skills.
*Aww. Sweet!
PS: When Raymond was studying at Xiamen, his grades were very good. He is a very bright person.
*Of course ... ha ha.
Eyes
Wenwei Pao
Raymond Lam and Sharon Chan, these two "Loving Eyes Stars" attended an opening ceremony yesterday where they and four children each used a small little sword to burst these black balloons. The meaning was to lead these children out of the world of blindness.
When Raymond Lam was interviewed he expressed that he had far-sightedness, near-sightedness and also astigmatism. When asked whether or not he took care of his eyes well when he was a child, Raymond laughed and replied, "The near-sightedness was probably passed on from my parents, the near-sightedness was probably because when I was studying, I read books too closely." Raymond expressed that due to the fact that he is always filming series, he doesn't get enough rest and so his eyes are exceptionally prone to redness. And even though he knows that eye drops aren't good, he has no choice.
At the mention of how TVB might be exchanging their ownership, Raymond said that he has heard his friends mentioning it, and even laughed that if he had the money, he would also want to buy a share. He said, "I'm not too worried. I'm sure that the way things are run would still be the same. Even if the owner is changed, there won't be any immediate alterations. Also, I'm an artist of the manufacture department. The manufacturing department is rather independent and so there probably won't be too big an effect. Also, if the ownership really changes, it might be a good thing, because there could be new influences and also new investments."
As to yesterday's reports of TVB having signed the good-looking, Taiwanese Mike He, thus becoming a threat to the heavily promoted Raymond Lam, Ron Ng, Kevin Cheng and Bosco Wong, as one of the four, Raymond replied, "I wouldn't have any stress. The company hasn't only just signed one person! TVB signs new people every year. I've worked with most of the TVB artists already and it's pretty good to have more new people. Plus, Taiwanese series and Hong Kong series are very different. Over there the series tend to be mostly idol series. If it's possible to bring new elements into the series then that's not bad!" Asking also whether Raymond considers himself as belonging to the idol group or the ability group, he expressed that his approach is to the ability group, but the series always comes first.
Sharon Chan, who was also present at the event, supported Raymond, saying, "Who's Mike He? Is he really that good-looking? But he can't be any better looking than my big brother (Raymond)." She also expressed that her near-sightedness is almost a thousand degrees and that she really regrets not taking good care of her eyes. She has considered going through laser treatment, but because her work schedule doesn't allow time for her to do so, she gave up.
Raymond Lam: Still like a Xia Men Boy
Credits: CSNN, Raymond's Forest; Translation by: Vickie
Yesterday when Raymond Lam arrived in Xia Men, the weather was extremely horrible with hard rain, but a lot of fans still waited early in the airport lobby. At 13:38 (1:38pm), the Hong Kong artist who was born here and went to Xia Men University arrived. Surprsingly, he was alone, wearing tight T-shirt, jeans, sports jacket and a cap. Looking like a boy, it's hard to connect with the king in "A Step Into The Past".
Interview was at Raymond's house in Xia Men. Raymond looks more skinny, and lighter than he was on television. He says, he used to purposely get a tan, so others won't be able to see his pale face and black eyes. Raymond Lam went to Xia Men University for 1 year in 1996, majored in architecture. He misses the times in Xia Men University, staying up late with his classmates, fooling around, and joined many outdoor activities. Raymond also said that he was the winner of that year's "School Top 10 Singers", and was invited to film some shows. Afterwards, he received a lot of girls' love letter, because he can't reply all of them, he told his classmates to help. Now, since Raymond is so busy, he has no time for a girlfriend. He doesn't have a specific image of his girlfriends, just have education, looks okay, easy to communicate will be fine. However, he especially love girls with long hair.
Tonight, Raymond will be at the 4th International Singing Contest to sing the themesong "Meeting Xia Men". Raymond says he feels the pressure, because it's his first time joining such a big event, and the song is more of a serious song. So he went to find his singing teacher to practice his singing, hoping he can go back to the times when he learned to sing.
Raymond's singing is not bad, he said that his company (TVB) gave him a lot of chances to sing themesongs and subthemes, but his series was one after another, he never have the time to have a CD. Need to focus on recording, might take at least 4 months of planning, hope that he will soon have an album. If he will, Raymond says that the CD should include any kind of style, fast songs, slow songs, love songs, etc, he is interested in trying all of them. ## Credit To: Winter_Stargirl@Beehive
News on Raymond -- Like a Xiamen Boy [4/8/2006]
Ta Kung Pao & Wen Wei Po, Aug. 4, 2006
Raymond Lam appeared as a Prince Charming at the 4th Duet Singing Contest in Xiamen earlier for the opening and as a guest performer, singing a song entitled "Meeting in Xiamen". This contest is the biggest duet competition in the world and even Chairman Hu has sent his best wishes for the event. Raymond is honoured to be invited to take part and said happily: "I feel a great honour to have this opportunity because all the contestants are winners in their own right, so I am quite nervous."
Although there were many great singers at the competition, totalling 400 acts from 80 different countries all around the world, Raymond's performance was great too and he received rousing applause from the audience. As his song is not a pop song and is a rather classical piece, there was a level of difficulty for him, but as Raymond has studied vocal pitch and has a musical background, he even won the praise of Xiamen's mayor for his performance. When Raymond was asked if he is happy with his performance, he said modestly: "Not really, I felt that I could have been even better because I have only rehearsed it properly a few times because I have only just returned from filming in Shanghai. I really was quite nervous because as well as many professional winning singers present, I am back in my own city, so I am taking this event very seriously." As this was a live broadcast event, many people were able to tune in and watch the show, so no wonder that Raymond was quite nervous. After the performance, he breathed a huge sigh of relief.
The organisers invited Raymond to perform at this show because they liked his appearance in a special show for his former school and they felt he had a very healthy image. During rehearsals, many people asked for Raymond's autograph and to have their photographs taken. As Raymond hails from Xiamen, he felt like he was returning home with glory. Raymond's mother even made him some special soup to help keep his throat in top condition. His parents and many relatives and friends still live in Xiamen as well as many of his fans, who went to the airport to meet him and present him with flowers and gifts. Raymond could not stay for too long though as he had to return to Hong Kong to film for Lau Ka Ho's new series.
